As with all good project outcomes, planning your Toronto kitchen personally will ensure a more satisfactory result before handing it over to professionals.

Your required outcomes should be clear before meeting your contractor. Put your thoughts and time into a layout, measuring and allocating task areas. Then allow your interior designer or decorator to adjust and improve before handing it over to a contractor.

Lists

Make a list of what you want your kitchen to do for you. Consider these questions:

  1. Who will spend the most time in the kitchen, and how many people is that?
  2. Do you entertain a lot, and what does that entertaining entail?
  3. Is there a main cook, a variety of cooks or rarely any cooking?
  4. Do you and your family have non-negotiables for the space?

Make a list of what you think will make that happen. For instance, more space, more storage, updated cabinets, more power points and the types of appliances.

Make a list of ALL the items that need storage. The more off-the-counter storage, the better. Include drawer storage and shelves or dividers to ensure maximum use of space. Drawers are more expensive and use more interior space, making storage more accessible.

Drawings

Get a to-scale drawing of your current space showing the locations of outlets, plumbing, windows and doors. Also, get a to-scale drawing of the To-Be space, showing the new positions. The moving of these items affects costs hence the need to know both.

Remember: Not all kitchens can accommodate an island as they need lots of flow space around them.

Put together a mood board, hardcopy or online. This collection of pictures shows which style you like, which design ideas you want and other elements you feel convey the kitchen’s usage.

The Importance of Finishes

The planning of your countertop, splashback, cabinetry and tapware must all be chosen with each other in mind. Their styles should be interconnected, and only one should be a feature. Choosing them independently because they are attractive will make for a disjointed interior.

Together they tell the story of the kitchen, not independently.
